Woman who dealt drugs over Facebook sentenced after customer dies, officials say

A woman who dealt drugs using Facebook messenger is headed to prison after someone who bought drugs from her died, according to R. Andrew Murray, District Attorney for Henderson, Polk, and Transylvania counties.Heather Marie Maybin, 38, from Hendersonville, was found guilty of the crime of death by distribution.According to the investigation and court trial record, Maybin was a known drug dealer who conducted her controlled substances activities over the social media platform Facebook Messenger. Investigators said Maybin helped arrange a transaction that took place on Feb. 6, 2023, in the Walmart parking lot located off Highland Square Drive. The transaction involved a quantity of fentanyl sold for $40. Later that evening, the victim and a friend of the victim ingested the drug. The victim used a hypodermic needle to introduce the fentanyl into her body, which caused her to lose consciousness and stop breathing. Dr. Patrick Lantz, of the Wake Forest Medical Center, determined the victim died of fentanyl toxicity. The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office was able to solve the case through witness interviews and communications received via Facebook Messenger, obtained with a search warrant. Maybin was sentenced to a minimum term of 66 months and a maximum term of 92 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections. “My office, along with our dedicated and professional partners, is committed to ridding our community of fentanyl by holding drug dealers accountable for these untimely and extremely tragic deaths,” said Murray.
